Bristol Braille Technology, a British tech company, plans to launch a new e-reader for the visually impaired people that would enhance their reading experience and spare them from lugging around hefty Braille books.

The device, called Canute 360, will be available for customers by the end of the year, Bristol announced. The device is a desktop e-reader which will support all six-dot Braille codes, and will include 360 cells, and three page-navigation buttons. It was originally developed for educational purposes.

Previously, the visually impaired struggled with the printed Braille books. Bristol hopes to change this situation through their new device, which it says will be the world’s first multi-line Braille e-reader, displaying nine lines of text at a time, or about one third of a page of regular print books.

The number of visually impaired people who can read Braille lettering, formed of one to six dots in a range of combinations, has fallen, partly due to advances in audio description technology. However, Bristol Braille says learning to read the new e-reader can significantly boost literacy and numeracy rates among visually impaired people.

Reuters spoke to Stephanie Sergeant, whose company Vision Through Sound worked with Bristol Braille, and she told them, “It refreshes a line at a time, starting at the top. So even though it takes a little while for all the lines to refresh, you can start reading almost as soon as you press the forward key.”

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Amr Talaat, targets to increase the sector’s contribution in to the Gross Domestic Production (GDP) over the next three years to beyond 5% compared to 3.2% in the last fiscal year (FY) 2017 while it aims to approach 4% of the GDP by the end of the current FY 2018/19.

The minister added over his speech at a conference entitled “Egypt goes digital, a committed nation,” organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt (AmCham) on Sunday, that the sector has grown by 14% in the last FY 2017/18 and achieved 18.4% in the first quarter (Q1) of FY 2018/19 while the ministry targets the sector to grow by 15% for the whole FY 2018/19.

Talaat said that his ministry is implementing the MCIT strategy over the next three years that stands on two main pillars which are human development and digital transformation.

Furthermore, Talaat noted that his ministry, in collaboration with the ministry of higher education, will launch the first artificial intelligence technology faculty, during the next academic year.

Additionally, the minister added that there is a plan to boost Egypt’s digital exports and create 100,000 jobs in the business of Information Communication Technology (ICT), explaining that the market enjoys high stability and the value created in ICT services is very high.

“We are focusing on capacity building, and we are trying to boost growth to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship,” mentioned the minister, adding that he aims to improve the telecom infrastructure through working on legislative reforms for branding Egypt as prominent destination for ICT.

“We act together under one umbrella, to rebuild with the Egyptian citizens’ skills,” said the minister, revealing the plans for the establishment of the Knowledge City in the heart of the New Capital with 4 buildings.

Moreover, the minister noted that the MCIT is launching several initiatives to improve the ICT skills of the Egyptian youth even before graduation, adding that there is a new initiative targeting the training of 10,000 Arab and African learners, 100 of whom will be helped to have their own start-ups in the digital gaming sector over the coming three years.

“For the first time, Sharm El Sheikh will host the meetings of The International Telecommunication Union next fall. It is the first time to be held out of Geneva, Switzerland,” acknowledged the minister.

In addition, the minister said that the marriage official or “Maazoon” will document marriages through tablets not with the traditional books in the marriage ceremonies.

For his part, the AmCham President, Tarek Tawfik, affirmed the role of the ICT sector in boosting the Egyptian economy especially that the Egyptian government implements firm digitalisation and transformation plans for addressing bureaucracy.

Sylvia Menassa, AmCham’s CEO, revealed that the AmCham Egypt will organise their upcoming events including an event organized on Monday to support the goal of an inclusive market for employment while the taxation committee will host the chairperson of the Taxation Authority on Wednesday.

“On 13 February, we will host the chairperson of the New and Renewable Energy Authority in Egypt, Mohammed El Khayat,” she mentioned.

The Chinese giant, Huawei, will introduce its MateBook X Pro laptop into Egyptian market, as the tech firm is seeking to rule out Apple’s MacBook Pro from the market. The laptop has a 14in screen squeezed into a 12in laptop frame, a discrete graphics processing unit (GPU), and a camera which pops up from beneath the keyboard.

The new thin and light laptop follows Huawei’s 2017 MateBook X, and looks strikingly familiar to Apple’s top-of-the-line notebook. With an aluminum body, the company has improved the notebook’s features, which impressed the audience in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, where the laptop was officially released.

“We pushed the boundaries of what technology and innovation are capable of, with the introduction of the new Huawei MateBook X Pro,” Richard Yu, CEO of the Huawei Consumer Business Group, stated during the tech firm’s press conference at the MWC 2018.

The notebook has already earned a significant number of recognitions and awards from several industry players, leaders, and prominent magazines, which made the Chinese firm ecstatic about its second successful attempt to take over its rival’s place in the laptop market.

Matebook X Pro comes with chamfered edges, and it features the latest Intel 8th generation quad-core i7 U series processor, with up to a 16GB of RAM, as well as an Nvidia MX150 discrete graphics processor with a 2GB memory. It also supports Thunderbolt 3, has two USB-C ports, a USB-A port, and a headphones’ socket, which are squeezed into a wedge shape that tapers from 16.6mm to 4.9mm, and weighs1.33 kilograms.

Huawei rates the battery life of the MateBook X Pro at 12 hours of video playback. The company is going to sell the device with a new compact 65W USB-C charger, which is about the same size as any smartphone’s fast charger, describing it as “intelligent enough to charge anything safely.”

Venture capital investment as the main method of funding start-ups has been on the rise, with venture capital activity in the United States reaching its highest levels in 2018.

According to PwC and CB Insights, US venture capital funding registered at around $99.5bn in 2018, marking its second highest recorded total since the peak of the dot-com boom in 2000.

Giant corporates started to enter the venture capital investment scene, and created their own venture investment arms, to get a better understanding of the process, and what makes a start-up more desirable, Daily News Egypt interviewed Head of Ericsson Ventures, Vice President of Ericsson, Albert Kim.
Kim revealed that Ericsson Ventures invests in leading companies to drive innovation in new areas, accelerate their core business, and generate strong returns. The transcript for the interview is below, lightly edited for clarity:

What is Ericsson’s ventures portfolio size, and what is your start-up selection criteria?

We have about 17 active companies at the moment.

When it comes to selection, our process includes several dimensions, the first one is what sector the start-up is active in, and it all comes back to driving strategic value.

At the end of the day Ericsson is a networks company, which keeps us within a certain range of sectors, starting from radio technology, to cloud-computing, edge cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-security, and then more new areas such as autonomous driving, virtual reality and augmented reality. So, everything comes back to networking.

From a stage perspective, we are pretty agnostic, so we invest in every early-stage company, the closer it is to our core sector, however, the further we go away from the core, we want to invest in a more mature company, with already existing products, and tens of millions in revenues.

Then we do typical investment diligence, with market sizing, to de-risk investment, so it is a typical check list, that’s how we select a start-up, what is important to us is a strong investment syndicate, as we want to be surrounded by other investors who are interested in funding the company.

Does Ericsson Ventures engage in the operations of companies they fund?

Good question, we don’t directly, but in some sense we do, we take a seat in the board of director of those companies, mostly on a non-voting basis, as an observer.

So we engage in board discussions, participate in the strategy, even in management, but we don’t go and directly micro-manage.

However, my team is very active in business development, we can assist with technical discussion, and offer a free business development assistance to the company.

Is the ROI the main focus of Ericsson Ventures, or the benefit to the mother company?

Both are equally important for us, we have a very strict requirement on financial performance, but again the way we drive that performance, is through making sure that the company works strategically well with Ericsson.

Can you elaborate on the amount of investments you usually offer, control percentage?

Usually between $1m and $5m, we invested as much $10m once.

In regard to our control percentage, it is purely based of valuation, so let’s say we invest a $2m in a company worth $100m, we get a 2%.

However we stick to an accounting rule, that when you are below 20% ownership, you don’t need to consolidate financial.

Farmers find it difficult to recognise signs of crop diseases quickly enough to protect the crops. Recently in Tanzania some farmers started to use a device directly in the field to find viruses before they spread.

The device is invented by a British technology company called Oxford Nanopore, and it analyses the DNA from plants, identifing the information of viruses’ DNA in the infected plants, making it easier for farmers to change to more resistant crops for common viruses in their area.

Smallholders produce up to 80% of food consumed in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.

New technologies could play a key role in helping Africa, which loses a larger percentage of crops due to diseases. It can also thrive amid rising heat, drought and erratic rainfall.

An academic researcher is attempting to help farmers to become familiar with the device. Laura Boykin from the University of Western Australia said in interview with a local newspaper: “We are collecting leaf punches from infected material to test. We need to do a DNA extraction and then start sequencing in the field.”

The device could help a lot of African countries, which lose some of its crops.

When the viruses are identified, farmers are given the resistant seeds, and the new plants from these seeds were healthy and produced a large, successful crop.

The Edge Innovation Centre will host a one-day event on Thursday for recruiters and talent management professionals to look at how technology impacts human resources and the workforce.

The event’s content will feature a panel on strategic workforce planning to discuss the analytic, forecasting, and the planning processes which connect and direct technology to talent management activities.

A second panel titled ‘Tech vs Touch’ will dive into the conundrum of this day and age, as well as the relationship between technology and the human touch, and the equation of finding the right balance between them both in order to reach the best results.

The panels will be followed by breakout sessions under two tracks. The first track is titled ‘Technology in Recruitment’ and will include topics such employer branding, accessing one’s own needs before a tech purchase, and how artificial intelligence helps cut through the candidate ocean in order to seek the right talent. The second track is titled ‘Talent Management’, and will include sessions on learning by storytelling, employee retention, as well as learning and development tech solutions, tools, and impacts.

LG Electronics announced its strategy for 2019 which focuses on customer satisfaction, especially the after-sales service which is a key factor for buyers of electronic devices in Egypt, as LG is looking forward to acquiring a larger market share.

LG will also invest $15m in Egypt, the most populated Arab country with millions of customers. The company’s investments in Egypt are estimated at $240m. In 2018, LG Egypt exports reached about $200m.

Don Kwack, LG Egypt’s managing director, stated, “LG is about bringing added value to the lives of consumers,” further adding, “Our new strategy for 2019 does not only focus on enhancing and building stronger relationships with consumers, but also ensuring that LG’s clients are offered better post-purchase services.”

The new customer-driven strategy aims to develop LG service centres with three new different ways in order to deal with customers’ requests. The first service is called ‘248 Service’ which gives a 24-hour timeframe for installation and repair without spare parts, and a 48-hour timeframe for installation and repair with spare parts.

The new “Priority Service” is the second service to prioritise specific home gadgets’ disruptions, even if they are related to spare parts. Customers who call before 12pm will be offered same-day maintenance, while next-day maintenance will be scheduled for customers who call after 12pm.

The third service is called “Care and Delight”, an application which contains all kinds of information related to LG’s customer inquiries to include the locations of LG’s service centres, the contact numbers of the call centres, as well as a WhatsApp link in order to ensure a better communication.

The post Smartphones’ giants face challenges in 2019 appeared first on Daily News Egypt.

During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the South-Korean tech giant, Samsung, announced that its 2019 smart TVs will include an iTunes software, which is operated by the American rival technology firm, Apple. According to a Senior Samsung Executive, Dave Das, the move is “a true first one.”

The tech giants are trying to increase their revenues, even if this means cooperating with competitors. Tech analysts say that the two titans of the smartphone market are looking for alternatives to generate profits, as the smartphone era is coming to its end faster than they expected.

One in two people think the smartphone itself will be obsolete within five years, according to a global Ericsson survey released at the end of 2015, which collected answers from 100,000 people. It is expected that innovations will stem from new areas, and the way people interact with devices will also change.

There are many factors behind this outcome, some of which are the interests of customers in bigger batteries which allow them to use devices for longer times, a feature that smartphones failed to provide. This is in addition to the high prices, and the similar features of smartphones available in the market.

Apple’s Struggle

At the beginning of 2019, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, issued a rare revenue warning to investors to inform them that the firm is expecting lower sales in the first quarter (Q1) of 2019 because of weak iPhone demand in China. However, analysts noted the problem probably exists elsewhere, and is not only confined to China.

The tech giant lost $500bn in market value over the past three months, giving the title of world’s most valuable public company to Amazon. In the past few years, Apple hiked up the price of its iPhone, the company’s major profit generator, with nearly 60% of Apple’s total sales.

Last year, the firm introduced iPhone X, and it came with a $999 price tag, which is $300 more expensive than iPhone 8, while iPhone XS Max starts at $1,099. Therefore, the company started to offer cheaper battery replacements.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder, had the talent of knowing what consumers wanted before they even did. However, the company is now struggling to lure in customers with new features in the new iPhones so as to persuade them to upgrade their devices.

Despite its revised outlook, Apple remains a healthy company. The question is whether the company will exist in the long term or not, keeping in mind that at one point, Nokia was the leader of the mobile phones’ sector, and currently it is a part of Microsoft.

Apple’s dilemma is similar to the situation which Microsoft found itself in. In 2014, the company promoted Satya Nadella, the previous head of Microsoft’s nascent cloud business, to run the company instead of Steve Ballmer.

Nadella focused on improving and providing features which attract users, accordingly, he decided to offer customers smartphone-like updates twice a year. He made Office available for free on the iPad, and shifted Microsoft’s focus to cloud computing.

Five years later, Microsoft passed Apple to become the most valuable company in the stock market. It is neck-and-neck with Amazon for cloud computing superiority, powering everything from corporate email servers to Pixar films.

Samsung is suffering as well

The South Korean company said last week that its Q4 operating profit is set to plunge nearly 30% from a year earlier, substantially below analysts’ forecasts. It blamed the sharp drop on a “lacklustre demand” for its memory chips and the “intensifying competition” in the smartphone industry.

Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker, did not specifically mention China in its earnings guidance, but it stated that “mounting” macroeconomic uncertainties are affecting its business.

The company said that it expected its operating profits for Q4 of 2018 to be estimated at $10.8tn ($9.6 billion), compared with a revenue of about $15.2tn ($13.5bn) in the same period last year. It predicted that sales will drop with about 11% to $59tn ($52.5bn).

Furthermore, it warned that the weak performance is likely to continue, predicting that its earnings will “remain subdued in Q1 of 2019 due to difficult conditions for the memory business” before they will improve later in the year.

The company hopes that the introduction of new technologies such as 5G services and foldable smartphones will help boost its mobile division. However, both companies need to give customers a big new product, as well as to diversify their profit sources to include more than just smartphones.

It’s not the first time that internet users, react on a matter likes the egg’s photo, there are record holders in favor of a lighthearted gag. Ericsson is one of the leading providers of information and communication technology (ICT) to service providers, with about 40% of the world’s mobile traffic carried through its networks, with a comprehensive portfolio ranging across networks, digital services, managed services, and emerging businesses, powered by 5G and internet of things (IoT) platforms.

DNE interviewed Thomas Olsson, head of the Ericsson Silicon Valley Experience Centre, to determine his thoughts on the adoption of 5G technologies.

Olsson joined Ericsson in 2002 as the head of the Sales Managed Service business unit. He moved to Argentina in 2007, where he was responsible for service delivery and the network’s roll-out across the region in South America. From 2011, he became the head of Global Sales in the Business Unit Support Solutions, based at the HQ in Stockholm, and since 2016 he was named as Vice President and the head of Ericsson’s Experience Centre in Silicon Valley. He is the appointed spokesperson for Ericsson, representing this area, and also speaks at several industrial conferences and seminars.

The transcript for the interview is below, lightly edited for clarity:

How does the Ericsson Experience Centre boost innovation, and improve the tech eco system?

Being a big company, I think we contribute to the dialogue between different eco-system players, and we also educate ourselves through the dialogue with the start-up community as we know the limitations of current technologies, but we don’t know about the opportunities, and the limitations of the next one.

We are trying to be highly active in order to communicate with our partners. We talk about IoT, cloud-computing, artificial intelligence, and what we can bring to the process of industry solutions, as we go forward.

Therefore, I think we are contributing to that process, in addition to our traditional customers, the telecom operators, with half or even more of the traffic at the centre coming from start-ups, eco-systems, and big companies, as they all are trying to figure out what does the 5G technology would mean for them.

DNE interviewed Thomas Olsson, head of the Ericsson Silicon Valley Experience Centre, to determine his thoughts on the adoption of 5G technologies.

What is the biggest challenge facing the adoption of 5G, is it affordability?

To build a 5G network, it doesn’t have a one-use case, in 3G and 4G, the use-case was pretty much the voice connectivity and the mobile broadband, so it was the sim card that you were buying.

For 5G, it is not about the sim card any more, rather it is about the value of information for the industry, and when a machine would be able to communicate with other machines. Those values are part of the initial challenge to define the industry’s use-cases.

The benefit from doing that is that there will suddenly be more business cases, as well as incentives for operators to build a 5G network. I believe that despite the fact that the 5G adoption will be slower at the beginning, but the process will go much faster than it took us to change from 3G to 4G.

However, it is different this time as it is not only about changing from 4G to 5G, rather the new network will be a combination of both. Accordingly, the technology that Ericsson brought to the market will use the same hardware, and we will undergo a software upgrade of what is already there.

How can infrastructure-sharing reduce the cost and accelerate the implementation of the 5G technology?

I think that is actually happening as the possibility to have different use-cases on the same infrastructure will in reality make new use-cases affordable. Take the energy or the mining industry today for example, if you have an oil rig, they can afford to build a dedicated 4G network, but if you have a small workshop or a small garage-company they will not be able to. With 5G, the operator can offer them a shared network as if it was dedicated to them, so the network’s division and reuse will drive the speed of 5G.

When will the 5G revolution take place?

Since October 2018, Verizon has started to offer 5G fixed internet wireless access in the US. In the country, there are 30m households without a cable internet connection as companies do not have an incentive to provide it to these houses, so today these people have poor coverage.

Today, around 60,000 sites in the US are relatively covered with 5G. There are other sites which are not covered because the business case is not there, but if you have hard use cases, operators would build coverage, even where there is no coverage now.

In order to have a 5G network with no latency everywhere, the number of sites might go up from 60,000 sites to 600,000, or perhaps even a million.

A lot of these sites will be lamp-poles, 100 yards away from each other, that is necessary to eliminate latency. In order to build up this network, it will be a challenge, not in terms of technology, rather from a social aspect, as maybe some communities would not want more of this technology.

But I think the challenge for us as a company right now is exploring the limitation for 5G, we don’t know what impact it will have on the different utilities, and the different use-cases.

Santa Clara- Mobile subscriptions have been on an upward trend in the latest decade, especially after the increase in smartphones’ penetration.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, around 3.9bn smartphone subscriptions existed by the end of 2016 around the globe. The majority of which—almost 90%—will be registered on the wideband code division multiple access/high speed packet access (WCDMA/HSPA), and the LTE (3G and 4G) networks.

However, GSM/EDGE (2G) subscriptions are still the largest subscription category.

The Ericsson Mobility Report reviews new opportunities were 5G can set the base for a successful mobile broadband business for communications service providers.

Current subscriptions status

According to the report, the total number of mobile subscriptions registered at about 7.9bn in the third quarter (Q3) of 2018, with 120m new subscriptions added during the quarter. On a year-over-year (y-o-y) basis, the number of mobile subscriptions grew at 3%.

The largest portion of new subscriptions was led by China by 37m, followed by India’s 31m, and Indonesia with 13m.

In regards to mobile broadband subscriptions, the report indicates that they are growing by 15% y-o-y, increasing by 240m in Q3 of 2018, to reach a total of 5.7bn.

According to the report, the number of LTE subscriptions increased by 200m during the quarter to reach a total of 3.3bn, while GSM/EDGE subscriptions declined by 110m over the same period.

Subscriptions associated with smartphones now account for more than 60% of all mobile phone subscriptions. Around 360m smartphones were sold in Q3, which equates to 86% of all mobile phones sold in the quarter.

However, in many countries – such as Egypt – the number of mobile subscriptions exceeds the population, which is largely due to inactive subscriptions, multiple device ownership, or the optimisation of subscriptions for different types of calls.

As a result, the number of mobile subscribers is lower than the number of mobile subscriptions.

5G is now

In regards to the 5G adoption, the report indicates that a strong momentum is observed in the global 5G market.

The report cites that the US, one of the major communications service providers, launched a 5G home internet service at the beginning of October, and all four of the country’s major service providers have publicly announced that they will begin providing 5G services between late 2018 and mid-2019.

Other markets expecting significant early 5G subscription volumes include South Korea, Japan, and China.

Meanwhile in Europe, some spectrum auctions have already been held, and others will take place over the next few years. The first commercial 5G subscriptions in the region are expected in 2019.

Moreover, on a global level, major 5G network deployments are anticipated from 2020, and by the end of 2024, Ericsson projected 1.5bn 5G subscriptions for enhanced mobile broadband. This will account for about 17% of all mobile subscriptions at that time.

Ericsson’s Vice President and the Head of Communication and Marketing for the Middle East and Africa, Fida Kibbi, informed Daily News Egypt that commercial 5G deployment in the Middle East and Africa will start in 2019 by leading telecommunication service providers, and is expected to reach significant levels by 2020/21.

Furthermore, Ericsson forecasts global mobile data traffic to increase more than five times between 2018 and 2024, while key drivers for 5G deployment include increased network capacity and decreased cost per byte. The 5G subscription uptake is expected to be faster than that for LTE, which in turn is the mobile communication technology with the fastest subscription uptake so far.

Per Gartner, the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company, estimates that cybercrime is expected to cost the world $6tn by 2021, and corporations are spending more money each year on security products and applications, related to protecting customer data and proprietary information. In 2019, worldwide spending on information security products and services is forecasted to grow by 8.7% to $124bn.

Mega corporations such as Facebook, Under Armour and Marriott had millions of customer records stolen last year, which has caused significant harm to the companies’ reputation. Moreover, even small businesses were targeted by cybercriminals. In fact, they were the target of half of the attacks.

Attackers used evasive techniques to bypassing security measures and avoided detection in the past, but currently there is an entire underground economy consisting of products, applications, and dedicated services which have emerged to assist attackers. it is even predicted that evasion techniques will become more agile due to artificial intelligence this year.

Enterprises have expansively relocated their data to the cloud using Infrastructure and platform-as-a-service cloud models such as Amazon Web Services and Azure in recent years, which is a factor that drives attacks on cloud platforms bound to increase.

Cryptocurrency mining has also increased both as a topic of interest and as an activity since cryptocurrency usage has grown exponentially in the last few years. Cybercriminals use the central processing unit power of victims’ phones and smartphones to mine cryptocurrency by infecting the device with malware.

Identity theft is currently even more sophisticated, employing multi-step fraud plans to grab information about new accounts. According to a 2017 survey, 1 out of 15 people reported being a victim of some sort of identity theft. Criminals are using Social Security numbers, home addresses, and knowledge-based authentication question answers to hopscotch from one kind of account to another.

Criminals are also matching up pieces of various identities to create an entirely new ‘person’ they can use to apply for credit cards and steal money. It is expected that identity theft will continue to rise in 2019.

Last year, there was a rise in ransomware attacks and cryptojacking, which imparts lower risks and better returns on investment. In 2019, it is forecasted that attackers will combine these tactics to create multifaceted, synergistic threats.

It is projected that there will be 75bn devices connected to the internet of things (IoT) by 2025, which is a substantial number of devices to secure, and presents new identify threat.

Therefore, in order to prevent the threats, the IoT security solutions are automating the detection process.

Crystal Market Research, the leading global market research, consulting firm, and business intelligence company, says that the IoT security market is projected to grow to over 30bn by 2022.

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat and the Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, Sahar Nasr, have agreed on allowing the Your Idea, Your Company initiative to be present in technological innovation hubs in universities in order to reach higher number of young people. This was decided during their meeting as a follow-up to the protocol which was signed between the two ministries in August in order to create a supportive business environment for entrepreneurship, empower Egyptian youth to develop their creative capabilities, and stimulate the local and international private sector and international financial institutions to invest in startups and the Egyptian Information and Communication Technologies sector.

Nasr highlighted that the Your Idea, Your Company initiative will provide training services on entrepreneurship, guidance and direction to develop concepts of of young adults in universities, as well as act to raise their legal awareness about how they can establish companies.

Talaat explained that the first phase of the initiative of establishing technological innovation hubs in universities, includes implementing eight centres in universities outside Cairo. These hubs will have technological laboratories for integrated software and systems, electronics’ design, technological incubators for businesses, joint business spaces for startups and specialised training rooms in different fields.

Both ministers perused the activities that were accomplished in the Your Idea, Your Company initiative, which aims to build and accelerate the growth of Egyptian entrepreneurs to develop innovative businesses in today’s competitive economy.

Nasr said that the ministry is working with international financial institutions to support the Your Idea, Your Company initiative, pointing out that effort is being continuously undertaken on supporting the integrated system of entrepreneurs, which is one of the priorities of the political leadership at this stage.

The minister also highlighted the importance of working to increase the number of start-up companies participating in the Your Idea, Your Company initiative, and completing the joint promotional campaigns of the initiative in in different governorates through its bus tours company which is sponsored and supported by the two ministries.

Meanwhile, the minister of communications stressed the ministry’s interest in supporting technological innovation and entrepreneurship among young people, and pointed out that exploits are currently underway to implement ambitious plans which target using post offices as outlets to provide lending services to entrepreneurs, in coordination with banks, which would help augment the government’s efforts to achieve financial inclusion and develop microenterprises.

On a different note, both sides agreed to increase their cooperation between the two ministries in order to develop investment zones, the mechanisation of the investor services centre and its branches in governorates, investment locations, as well as free zones.

Samsung, the Korean electronics giant has said that as of spring 2019, its new smart TVs will include iTunes, software made by rival tech firm Apple. The smart TVs will also feature support for Amazon’s Alexa support and Google Assistant, alongside its own voice assistant Bixby.

The announcements came during the first day of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019.The move was “a true first”, Senior Samsung Executive Dave Das informed the tech show in Las Vegas. As a possible first sign of cooperation of television services between and Apple, the company is looking to distribute its forthcoming television service on devices made by others.

The giant smartphone makers have a complicated history, as they spent years locked in a costly legal battle over patents. At one point, Apple wanted Samsung to pay $2bn for systematically copying features of Apple devices, and the case ended up at the US Supreme Court. The companies finally settled last summer for an undisclosed amount.

Tech analysts see the move as extraordinary, since “Samsung has made numerous failed moves in video services, while Apple is still seeking to crack the TV landscape,” Paolo Pescatore, an independent tech analyst said in an interview with BBC.

Apple showed signs of loosening its grip in November when it announced that Amazon’s (AMZN) Echo devices would support Apple Music. The two companies also struck a deal which allows Amazon to directly sell Apple devices, in exchange for cracking down on unauthorised third-party sellers on the site.

During CES 2019, the tech giant also announced a new range of home appliances, from front-loading washing machines with an application which “provides a recommended cycle depending on the specific items, item colours, and dirt levels”, to a fridge that sends an alert to its owner’s phone if the door is left open.

Samsung also released several robots tailored for specific tasks. Bot Care, for instance, is designed to check people’s blood pressure, pulse, and heart rates by placing a finger on the machine’s upturned face-an animated screen- and this way Bot Care obtains its user’s vital signs.

Other robots in the range have been designed to help customers in shops, purify indoor air, and assist seniors or less mobile people when walking.

Every year, Google gives an insight into the things which captured the internet surfers’ attention in Egypt over the past 12 months, from major highlights in news, sports, and entertainment, to the most searched for public figures.

Egyptian football fans showed their passion for the sport in 2018, as the FIFA World Cup dominated the internet, ruling out all other tournaments to be the most searched for event in the country. The second most googled event was the presidential election, followed by the Cairo International Film Festival in the third place.

Egyptians’ interest in ‘Mahraganat’ music, a hip-hop-adjacent street music, kept on increasing in 2018, with three Mahraganat songs among the top five googled songs list. ‘Mahragan La La’ came on top of the list, ‘Ana Gada3’ at the second place, meanwhile the Spanish hit song ‘Despacito’ came at the third place. The Spanish song was announced the first YouTube video in history to reach 5 billion views.

The Egyptians are enamored by Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s Egyptian winger, as they are keen on knowing every detail published on him on the internet. Salah is the most googled public figure in 2018, followed by the Lebanese pop singer Haifa Wehbe, in the third place comes Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, Croatia’s president who won many admirers for showing her love for football at the World Cup final in Moscow.

Google takes into account the number of people typing in different search terms, in their annual trends report. It looks at the themes being searched for, and how and when the volume of the searches peak. According to the tech giant, these are all noted anonymously as the person who typed a particular search term is not taken into account.

As for entertainment, Egyptians have searched for Mohamed Ramadan’s last TV Series, Nesr El-Saeed, as the series came as the top googled TV series, followed by Masrah Misr’s third season in second place, while Sok Ala Akhwatak came in the third place.

The Super-Fi internet access has been installed and tested throughout the airport’s three terminals. It will now provide millions of travelers with improved online connectivity.

Internet access is free for public use throughout the terminals, allowing travelers to connect with family and friends upon arrival and prior to departure.

CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, Bryan Thompson, said: “We understand just how important Wi-Fi has become to the travelling public. At Abu Dhabi Airports, we value our customers first and foremost, placing a primary focus on their experiences while coming and going from the UAE’s capital. Access to fast internet is a crucial factor that makes a big difference for our travelers. Providing our customers with enhanced connectively services is in line with our vision of becoming the world’s leading airports group.”

Thompson added: “We are proud to have rolled out ‘Super-Fi’ across the entirety of Abu Dhabi International Airport, free for all of our travelers. Super-Fi is not just Wi-Fi, it is incredibly fast and reliable, allowing our customers to keep in touch while using our fantastic facilities. Technology is at the heart of our digital transformation strategy, and this improved internet infrastructure will open the door to further smart services and connected solutions.”

Abu Dhabi Airports is a public joint-stock company wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi government. Currently under way is the development and expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport designed to increase the overall capacity of the airport.

Last October, Abu Dhabi Airports and Cisco signed an agreement that provides the airport with cutting-edge solutions that will support its digital transformation strategy, including operational efficiency, digital capacity, and customer experience.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region presents a great opportunity for companies in the commercial printing business, as the market is estimated to grow by 6.2% in 2019, to be one of the world’s highest growth regions for printing.

In 2019, the total value of the commercial print business in MENA is forecast to reach $32bn, according to a research from Smithers Pira, the worldwide authority of packaging, print, and paper supply chains. They released the data ahead of the 2019 edition of the Gulf Print and Pack, a leading industry event for the commercial print and packaging industry in the region.

“The report estimates MENA will grow by 6.2% by next year. This is way ahead of the growth rate for the world print market, which at 1% is struggling to adjust to declines in demand for traditional print products as media products become increasingly digitised,” said Andy Thomas-Emans, strategic director at Tarsus Group.

There are several strategic trends that will influence the print business in MENA in 2019. Inkjet will remain the region’s fastest growing print technology, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.7%. This is followed by electrophotography and gravure. “This shows that the region still has a huge untapped market for digital technologies that could spur the growth of the industry in the future,” added Thomas-Emans.

Xerox, a provider of digital print technology, sees the Middle East region as one of the most strategically important markets for the company and considers the coming trade show to be a great platform for strengthening its customer and partner relationships as well as showcasing the brand’s latest offerings. It has launched new machines for the show, often ahead of their global roll out to “underscore the significance of the event to our business throughout the Middle East and Africa (MEA),” said Pui Chi Li, head of marketing at Xerox MEA.

Meanwhile, package printing is the most valuable end-use application for print in MENA, worth $20bn in 2019. Industry stakeholders aiming to secure business projects are encouraged to attend the Gulf Print and Pack 2019, which is scheduled to take place in April at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Several US newspapers suffered major printing and delivery disruptions on Saturday following a cyber-attack, which led to delayed distribution of The Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun, and other titles belonging to Tribune Publishing.

The company said in a statement it first detected the malware, which hit papers sharing the same printing plant, the attack is believed to have come from outside the US, the LA Times said.

West Coast editions of the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, which share the same production platform in Los Angeles, were also affected.

“We believe the intention of the attack was to disable infrastructure, more specifically servers, as opposed to looking to steal information” Tribune Publishing spokesperson Marisa Kollias confirmed in a statement, saying the virus hurt back-office systems used to publish
and produce “newspapers across our properties”.

“Every market across the company was impacted,” Kollias said, refusing to give more specifications on the disruptions, according to the LA Times.

Other publications owned by the company include the New York Daily News, the Orlando Sentinel and the Annapolis Capital-Gazette, whose staff were the targets of a deadly shooting earlier in 2018.

Another publication, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, was also “crippled this weekend by a computer virus that shut down production and hampered phone lines,” according to a story on its website.

“We are aware of reports of a potential cyber incident affecting several news outlets and are working with our government and industry partners to better understand the situation،” a Department of Homeland Security official said in a statement.

The post Technology, AI, commercial applications will continue to grow in 2019 appeared first on Daily News Egypt.

]]>
With some impressive, high-performance, and extremely expensive gadgets, big names in the technology industry were competing in 2018, with the race extending into 2019, as some predictions about new developments could occur.

In its forecast report for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2019, the Tractica, a market intelligence firm, foresees that the capabilities and commercial applications of AI will continue to rapidly progress, but it warns of the pains that this growth could bring.

The key trends to watch in the AI market in 2019 will include the commercialisation of promising technologies, the growth of new application markets, changes in hardware architectures and infrastructure to support AI deployments, as well as the continuing evolution of business models and public policy issues.

AI is now being used in an ever-expanding array of products such as self-driving cars, robots which identify and eradicate weeds, computers able to distinguish dangerous skin cancers from benign moles, as well as the smart locks, thermostats, speakers, and digital assistants which are bringing technology into homes.

Key predictions

Tractica identified the key predictions covering the various aspects of the ever-evolving AI market, based on the firm’s on-going research and analysis through conducting extensive primary research and interviews.

It forecasts that reinforcement learning (RL) will see a higher use in enterprises, as RL has seen a limited application within the enterprise sector so far, unlike its popularity in academic research circles. Within enterprises, RL has been applied in the manufacturing, energy, building automation, and automotive sectors, mostly related to optimising and improving the performance of autonomous machines or control systems, which can be simulated in an RL-infused environment

Meta learning will see small steps in the enterprises sector, as it is actually about teaching AI to develop new methods. In the context of deep learning or machine learning, it is about having a meta AI or top-level AI, improving the fundamental model, algorithm, as well as the architecture of the targeted AI.

As AI is at the heart of autonomous retail using cameras and sensors in combination with deep learning-driven software that recognises people, movements, poses, objects, and actions like picking up and keeping items on shelves, 2019 will witness the replacement of autonomous vehicles with autonomous retail in the new hype cycle. Amazon plans to launch more than 3,000 stores across the USA and the rest of the world by 2021, so the competition is already building up.

A challenging year

In 2019, Apple could cement its reputation as the “new Microsoft” –a company with a massive valuation which ceased to provide new innovations. The iterations of the iPhone still account for the majority of its revenue, and with an entry point device costing £749, it increasingly seems as it is a company targeting wealthy baby boomers. Apple is also spending $100bn at next year’s revamp of the Apple TV, which some people do not feel that it will be a new paradigm.

Despite some recent deals with Amazon to get its services on Alexa devices, Apple has fallen behind and priced itself out of the burgeoning market for connected gadgets and digital assistants.

Facebook will be hoping that its declining popularity in Europe doesn’t turn into a stampede, if the EU’s investigations about data sharing result in enormous fines, the advertisements it is introducing to WhatsApp in 2019 will not prompt users to join other messaging services, and the cloning of Instagram’s stories by Facebook and YouTube will not divert their revenues and users to other platforms.

The post ‘I agree to Terms & Conditions of service’: What information do we voluntarily give out to big tech companies? appeared first on Daily News Egypt.

]]>
2018 was a year full of news reports about exposing users’ personal information of big names in technology industries, either through hackers or third-party developers like what happened in Cambridge Analytica’s case, in which the political consulting firm harvested profile information of over 50 million Facebook users.

The big tech companies usually have legal agreements to enable users to use their service, most people do not read them however. During Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony before Congress over the Cambridge Analytica’s scandal, one of the representatives had a printed copy of Facebook’s agreement terms to use the service—it was pretty thick. Here is a simple explanation of the information that big tech firms usually collect.

Google

The American tech giant stores the location of the user, if the location tracking turned on, Google has recently allowed users to see the map that is collected by the data, then users can see a timeline of where they have been from the very first day they started using Google on their phone, including the time of day that they were in the location and how long it took to get to that location from the previous one.

Google also stores information on every application and extension you as a user have used. The firm knows how often you use them, where you use them, and who you use them to interact with. That means Google knows who you talk to on Facebook, what countries are you speaking with, and probably what time you go to sleep.

All videos that users have watched on YouTube are being collected, so Google probably knows whether you’re going to be a parent soon, if you’re a conservative, if you’re a progressive, if you’re Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, if you’re feeling depressed or suicidal, even if you’re anorexic.

Google offers an option to download all of the data it stores about users, this file is around 5GB big, which is roughly 3m Word documents, and it includes the bookmarks, emails, contacts, Google Drive files, all of the above information, YouTube videos, the photos users have taken on their phone, the phones the users owned.

Facebook

Facebook has a similar option to download all the collected information that they harvested from users accounts, which include every message you’ve ever sent or been sent, every file you’ve ever sent or been sent, all the contacts in your phone, and all the audio messages you’ve ever sent or been sent, every time you log in, where you logged in from, what time, and from what device.

Facebook stores all the applications you’ve ever had connected to your Facebook account. The data is being collected includes tracking where you are, what applications you have installed, when you use them, and what you use them for.

The company has access to your webcam and microphone at any time, your contacts, your emails, your calendar, your call history, the messages you send and receive, the files you download, the games you play, your photos and videos, your music, your search history, your browsing history, even what radio stations you listen to.

The amount of personal information about users of what is called ‘free service’, might be shocking for some people, yet it reveals a critical aspect of living in the modern age.

Spanish travel technology firm Amadeus IT Group signed a cooperation protocol with EG Gate portal to provide a range of logistic and digital services in the fields of e-commerce and tourism via its digital platform.

The protocol was signed by Khaled Gad, the general manager of AMADEUS Egypt and Minas Ibrahim, CEO and managing director of EG Gate. This cooperation aims to make AMADEUS’s content available on EG GATE’s platform to attract international tourism to Egypt, in addition to promoting Egyptian tour companies’ content on EG GATE’s platform using the latest technological implements, in the tourism and traveling field. It also targets marketing Egyptian tourism globally via a database of 500,000 international tour companies, which cooperate with AMADEUS.

AMADEUS uses the latest technology techniques and solutions in the tourism and traveling field to assist airlines; airports; hotels; railways; travel agencies; tour operators, and other travel companies to run their operations and improve the travel experience.

In the first half of 2018, Egypt’s tourism revenues jumped by 77% to around $4.8bn compared to the same period last year. The number of tourists who visited Egypt in that time jumped by 41% to around 5 million tourists.

The tourism sector is one of the country’s main sources of foreign currency, but has struggled since the 2011 uprising that ousted former president Hosni Mubarak. A total of 14.7 million people visited Egypt in 2010 before the uprising.

Self-driving car startup Zoox has become the first company to receive an approval from California state regulators to provide autonomous ride services for public passengers.

The California Public Utilities Commission announced that Silicon Valley-based Zoox was the first company to join a state pilot programme in which self-driving cars will transport passengers, marking a step forward in the development of fully autonomous urban transportation options.

The ability to test cars with public passengers allows self-driving companies to refine their technology and begin to smooth out rides so that they can be more enjoyable for public consumption. During the test process, several autonomous cars drive slowly, making jerking movements and hesitating.

Several companies, including Zoox, have been testing their self-driving cars with employees and family members.

“This is a really significant milestone as we head towards commercial launch, which we have stated is toward the end of 2020,” said Bert Kaufman, head of corporate and regulatory affairs at Zoox.

The company is one of 62 companies with a permit to test self-driving cars in California, according to the State Department of Motor Vehicles, although most operate in the shadow of Alphabet Inc’s business unit Waymo, which began work on the technology a decade ago.

The robot cars will not be unleashed without human oversight. Regulators are requiring that a backup test driver remain in the driver’s seat to take over if necessary. Zoox is also not allowed to charge passengers, keeping the prospect of a profitable business model elusive.

There were some incidents which took place during the testing of autonomous cars in the last few years. Uber has recently been granted the permission to reinstate tests of its autonomous vehicles, after the ride-hailing giant halted testing of its self-driving cars following a fatal accident that left a pedestrian dead in Arizona, the US, last March.

The post Digital era of Egypt in years to come appeared first on Daily News Egypt.

Sheikh Mahmoud is the owner of a small book shop in Shubra El Kheima, Qaliubiya. Today, he is struggling with some customers who want to print papers in his shop, but the street where Mahmoud lives and works in has no mobile network coverage. “They want to send the paper to be printed through WhatsApp, and this takes a long time!” he said.

In his speech at the Cairo International Exhibition and Conference on Telecommunication and Information Technology (ICT 2018), President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi pointed out that the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector was given priority via improving and modernising the telecommunications infrastructure, establishing smart cities, and enabling citizens to use digital services. “We are on the right path towards a digital society,” he said.

Al-Sisi emphasised that the purpose of creating a digital society is to provide equal opportunities for citizens to participate in the development process, and to provide innovative digital services that improve operational efficiency, increase productivity as well as the standard of living. Egypt still needs billions of dollars in investment to upgrade its telecommunications infrastructure.

Mahmoud’s customers have to walk outside the street to receive a signal so as to send their papers which he downloads by ADSL service, then they come back to get it, as this street is one of many non-statistical numbers of streets in informal settlements across the country, where houses are built very close to each other thereby weakening the mobile phone signal. Mahmoud hopes that the government’s improvements of telecommunications infrastructure can end his struggle. “We hear about the developments and we want it here too”.

A dream from the future

With a 96 million population, Egypt has more than 100m mobile subscriptions today, compared to less than 10m subscriptions for landlines and fixed broadband services, which makes Egypt one of the largest telecom markets in North Africa, and a promising market for multinational companies.

The government in recent months has attempted to secure billions of dollars in funding to develop technology parks, and to extend broadband availability, and in the process to create jobs in ICT and rekindle international investors’ interest.

Liquid Telecom, a subsidiary of Econet Wireless, singed a partnership deal with Telecom Egypt – of which the state owns 80% stake and the remainder of its shares listed on the Egyptian and London stock markets – to invest $400m in data centres, infrastructure, and financial inclusion in Egypt over the next three years.

The corporation, founded by Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa, has recently completed its extensive ‘Cape to Cairo’ network, which connects 13 African countries with over 60,000 km of fibre optic cabling, the network will play a key role in bringing fibre to the home (FTTH) services to millions of people over the coming years.

Mostafa Abdel Wahed, head of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), said at Cairo ICT that the NTRA could start granting 5G frequencies to the country’s four mobile service
providers, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and Telecom Egypt, by the beginning of 2020. The world is heading towards the 5G technology era, where countries such as South Korea and the United States have easily moved early to create a testing ground to develop practical uses for this advanced technology, that will add an estimated $565bn to the global economic output over the next 15 years if it was used to connect robots or other applications.

But governments will first need to harmonise standards for granting the so-called millimetre wave spectrum, which can carry the vast data flows needed to power 5G services, the GSMA – the global trade body representing mobile network operators, stated in a recent report. The industry sees potential not just for the connectivity of 5G, but also for other services such as industrial automation, remote surgery,
or virtual meetings, the GSMA added.

Many telecom companies are already auctioning low- and mid-band spectrum for 5G, but it is millimetre wave frequencies of above 6 GHz that are critical to advanced applications thanks to their high data capacity.

Better services

The 4G mobile network service was officially launched in Egypt in September 2017 following many delays, introducing Egyptians to high-speed telecom services, but the country has yet to fully make use of its 4G spectrum, and the service does not completely cover the country.

Bahy Mohamed, a resident in the Sixth of October City, has an unusual issue with the mobile service. He said that the data counter of the company he subscribed in, shows a substantial different gap of the usage. Last month, there was a 5GB gap between his mobile data counter and the company’s data counter.

Ashraf Selim, an Egyptian accountant who works in Dubai, had a similar issue while he was visiting his parents last summer. “In Dubai, I have subscribed to an internet bundle and I have never finished the gigabytes, because I am not a heavy internet user, but when I subscribed to a bundle with the same amount of gigabytes in Egypt, they were gone after 15 days only”.

“I called the customer service and the employee told me that gigabytes in Dubai are different than those in Cairo,” he added.

Both Mohamed and Selim are customers of the same company, Vodafone, which is the largest mobile service provider in the country. Daily News Egypt asked for an official comment from the company’s side, but no comment was sent until the time of publishing of this article. The company website says that it works very hard to provide high-quality service to its customers.

Many Egyptians are not satisfied with the mobile service because of technical issues they face or its high price compared to their income. Yet, Mohamed hopes for better services in the future. “We are in 2018, technology can make miracles become true, and I hope one happens in Egypt soon.”

In the embrace of new technology, every step counts in Egypt’s digital transformation, according to Jacques-Emmanuel Blanchet CEO, HSBC Egypt.

Egypt’s banking architecture is getting a digital upgrade. Efficiency and personalisation are at the top of the list of preferences as one of the world’s oldest civilisations undergoes a very modern disruption.

Progress and change

Two of Egypt’s national goals, to modernise its economy and to support a rapidly growing population, are being carried out within a positive economic outlook. The GDP in the fiscal year 2018 is expected to rise by 5.8%. Egypt’s proactive attitude is driving digital growth in the country’s banking sector and is filtering down to the consumer too. This is largely down to the government, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) with the support of the local banking community.

A progressive tone from the top is matched by an enthusiastic response from the banks and the public. This banking ‘marriage’ is bearing fruit.

Seamless customer experience

From the top down, the National Payments Council is putting in a general framework to shift to a less cash-based society, and to create a national system of payment and cards. Meanwhile, the CBE is investing heavily in developing a ‘seamless’ customer experience that is more efficient and easy to use.

Both aim to safeguard the value of human interaction i.e. intensifying the level of trust and loyalty in the customer-bank relationship. The country’s approach includes the promotion of innovative technologies in the design and delivery of financial services. This includes the review of digital banking regulations, and the launch of a fund for innovation and talent investments worth EGP 1bn ($558m).

Digital maturation

From the bottom up, Egypt’s banking community – banks and customers alike – is keen to embrace change. Nearly all respondents, 90.57%, to an HSBC digital survey carried out in Cairo, expect ‘the internet of things’ (the trend towards more devices being online) to have a major impact on their existing business model. Leveraging this appetite for digital maturation is key.

The same applies to tailoring services for different socioeconomic and digitally-able customers. Clear communication to improve understanding within the banking community is vital to build trust and adopt digital banking tools. Patience is also essential, as it will take time to shift the national psyche towards digital banking.

It’s about family

Egypt’s tightknit family and social network must be addressed in banks’ marketing and communication programmes as ‘word-of-mouth’ recommendations carry significant weight when it comes to building reputations and communicating change. The influence of informal knowledge sharing in Egypt will only heighten as the world’s most populated Arab nation gets busier. The United Nations (UN) expects Egypt’s 97 million population today to rise to 120 million by 2030 – a 23% growth in less than 12 years.

As one of the largest multinational banks in Egypt, and with a presence since 1982, HSBC’s unwavering dedication to build its digital knowledge will continue. The bank has been a leading and respected voice on digital advancements for over three decades. Plans to spend $15bn-$17bn on technology, worldwide, up to 2020 are underway, in addition to $6bn in recent years. Such efforts will undoubtedly enhance Egypt’s digital journey, be it through talent creation, research and development, or tech deployment.

Digital toolbox

There are many new digital methods that Egypt’s banking community can use. These include the next generation virtual accounts, enhanced liquidity management, and more streamlined mobile collections and payments. HSBC is always working on how to design and deploy new technologies, including machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), biometrics and blockchain.

HSBC completed its inaugural blockchain transaction for trade finance this year. This is highly relevant for a growing banking community as each transactional step is entirely transparent and accountable. It is also attractive for Egypt’s growing trade finance market as the country’s gas exports, for example, are likely to rise significantly.

More than half, or 56.6%, of survey respondents to our digital research agreed that international trade has become more difficult over the last three years. This means that making cross-border trade easier by using digital tools is even more critical to sustain Egypt’s global competitiveness.

Challenges to overcome

As with any market in development, some areas need more attention. These include improving cybersecurity, legal frameworks, and scalability. Therein lies the value of collaboration and knowledge sharing, something that HSBC is able to facilitate.

To take an example – globally, banks’ ties with Fintechs are thriving. HSBC’s data showed that approximately $31bn was invested in Fintechs around the world last year. Collaboration agreements and sandbox environments, both promoted by regulators, can help test the relevance of new technologies in Egypt’s banking community.

We must not fear the unknown. Egypt must keep its best foot forward, for every digital step counts.

Twitter can be described as one of the top online news and social networking platforms on which users post and interact with messages known as “tweets”. California-based Twitter Inc has more than 25 offices around the world.

Created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, Twitter managed to rapidly gain worldwide popularity. In 2012, over 100 million users posted 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6bn search queries per day.

In 2013, it was one of the ten most-visited websites and has been described as ‘the SMS of the Internet’. As of 2016, Twitter had more than 319 million monthly active users.

The social media platform has been the centre of debates and news covering politics of the United States and elsewhere, especially during the 2016 US presidential election, Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination, and 2018’s US Midterms.

Twitter proved to be the largest source of breaking news on the day of the 2016 election, with 40m election-related tweets sent by 10 pm.

Daily News Egypt interviewed Twitter’s Middle East and North Africa Managing Director, Benjamen Ampen, to find out about the company’s latest financial results and future plans, the transcript for which is below, lightly edited for clarity:

How did your business perform in the third quarter (Q3) of 2018, what did you do differently?

We managed to increase our advertising revenue by 29% year-over-year (y-o-y). We actually did not do things differently. These trends of revenue growth have been going on for several quarters, and this is the result of different efforts that we have been doing on our products. When you think about it, we wanted to make sure that we kept improving the value for advertisers, through better engagement and ad-relevance.

As a social media platform, we fully took advantage of the original investment for advertisers in terms of value – engagement and reach – and price.

It has never been clear what Twitter specifically brought to businesses, but we now know that Twitter has the most valuable and receptive audience. It is a message that we have been perceiving, and now the market is responsive to it.

Do you think that the current growth rate is sustainable?

For the remainder of the year and the year after, we are very optimistic about our ability to maintain our priorities and value for advertisers. Making sure advertisers will reach their audiences when they are most receptive is one of our priorities, so they can get better returns and engagement. We also make sure to build trust with our customers. In Twitter, we want to keep our leadership in terms of quality, transparency, and accountability.

Increasing ad revenue growth without affecting the quality of user experience is a challenge, how do you plan to keep this balance?

It is a very important point. We prioritise the platform users’ experience and the health of the conversation. When you look on Twitter, you need to think about what we are advertising on it—unlike other platforms—we only take content that already exists in public, and use our products to amplify it. As it is very selective, we are really far from ad saturation.

At the end of the day, what matters is the relevance of these ads, if we manage to present ads that are really relevant to users, we will know because they will engage them, unlike other social media platforms.

To summarise, first, we keep in mind the health of the platform, to ensure peoples’ safety, followed by content relevance. Second, we are working on our products to ensure that they add value to our users. Third, we keep a very close eye on how we think about advertising on Twitter, because advertising should not be a nuisance.

Data privacy was one of 2018’s controversies; as a platform how do you protect your users’ data?

This controversy about data is linked to the health of the platform. Twitter is very unique because it is public, so when you think about the tweets on the platform, they are public and searchable. The majority of Twitter users choose to engage in public conversation, so any data we have is not private. It is very important to highlight that we do not provide any personal data, only the ones that are already public.

How can Twitter balance protecting freedom of speech and combat hate speech?

Improving the health of our platform is our main objective. We are fundamentally rethinking how the platform works, so that together we can increase the collective health, civility, and openness of the conversation on Twitter.

What are the latest developments about Twitter’s new verification standards? When can we expect it?

Verification was meant to authenticate identity and voice, but it was misinterpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance. We recognised that we have created this confusion and are working to resolve it. We have suspended all general verifications and we will report back soon.

For Arabic Twitter, can you tell us about the original Arabic programmes that were produced on Twitter?

Globally, when we are talking about our numbers, we mention higher engagement. We have a 9% y-o-y user growth, which is a good indicator. I am mentioning this because with local presence – like our regional office – we are making sure that we contribute to that.

In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, we recognise the appetite for high quality and premium content. Taking into consideration that most of the region is actually talking in Arabic on the platform, we make sure that we provide programmes that add value to the users.

We introduced three Arabic language programmes that were produced by our partners. Twitter is not producing this content, we work with the best content producers out there.

In Ramadan, for example, we introduced a programme called #HawanahZein, which is an evening Arabic show that focused on what was happening in the Arab world on Twitter during the holy month. The show attracted an average of half a million viewers per episode.

During the FIFA World Cup, we introduced #YallaGoal, an evening Arabic show, which focused on football-related news on Twitter during the tournament. The show had an average of 400,000 viewers per episode. All in all, the show attracted a total of 10m video views, which included both the live episode and highlighted clips. In Egypt, this show had different people presenting the talk show, one of them was Hany Hathout, the famous Egyptian sports presenter, to make it more relevant to the region and Egypt. As Egypt is one of the most important markets when it comes to football, this show was filmed in Cairo.

Most recently, Sayidaty, a women fashion magazine, launched #FrontRow, an evening Arabic fashion series, that coincided with the Big Four Spring 2019 fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. The show generated an average of over 260,000 viewers per episode. All in all, the show generated a total of more than 6m video views, which included both the live episode and highlighted clips. This is the first live fashion news series to ever take place on Twitter—globally.

*Editor’s Note: live streams of fashion runway shows have taken place on Twitter but there have never been any fashion news series until this show was launched.

How much was MENA’s share of Twitter revenues?

We do not break down our revenues by country or region. However, we can say that Egypt is one of the top 20 fastest-growing markets globally. For the region, although I cannot share the exact number of revenues, I can tell you that we are at an all-time high.

How do you plan to increase Twitter’s penetration in Egypt?

When we think about Egypt, we know it is the biggest country in the region. Consequently if we want to grow on the long-term, we need to invest in this country, and that is something we have been doing through several initiatives. Earlier this year, we had a team working on Egypt’s presidential election, ensuring that the poll results were streamed to increase engagement. In all the world, not only Egypt, elections are usually a big driver of user growth.

During the FIFA World Cup, we had a content publishing team dedicated to the Egyptian national team, as we understand how important football is in Egypt, so we saw it as an opportunity for us. We made sure that the full squad were on Twitter. It was not only about Mohamed Salah, as the other players are important as well to the Egyptians. We had video highlights on the platform about what the Egyptian team was doing during the tournament, in partnership with Presentation Sports.

In the next year, there will be more programmes as well, bringing new users on the platform. On the advertising side, we have been working a lot with different organisations that can have an impact, such as the World Youth Forum in Sharm El-Sheikh.

When it comes to ‘Twitter moments’, do you plan to introduce country-specific moments?

Twitter is about what is happening in the world, more than something specific in a certain country. In Egypt’s case, ‘moments’ are curated for Egypt, however, some regional moments are also included, and the chronology of publishing moments varies based on whom the publisher is following.

You have recently conducted a study, have you shared it with marketers?

The study confirmed what we have already known, that Twitter users are more valuable, as people on Twitter usually aim to discover and engage with new content.

In Egypt, the study confirmed that Twitter is the best place to see ‘what’s happening’, to follow developments in real-time and to ‘see every side’.

In this study, Twitter wanted to better understand why its users are turning to the platform to see what is happening, and what makes their user experience unique. Watching news in real-time, as it happens, and being closely immersed in the action is one of the main strengths of Twitter, with 72% of users turning to Twitter for news (85% amongst daily users).

In terms of user experience, the findings revealed that people who want quality news turn to Twitter. Users in Egypt like to use the platform because news spreads faster on it (71%), they can follow developments in real-time (69%) and can ‘see every side’ of a story (72%). They are also heavily reliant on Twitter for news, when something is not discussed on Twitter, they question its significance (61%).

What are the latest product changes that you have made?

We keep on pushing a lot on videos, because today more than half of our revenues come from videos, so we keep on investing in it. We have also added the ability to stream audio only. What is interesting that we have seen that a lot of people used our streaming options for audio only.

Twitter has managed to remove a tonne of fake accounts during your latest campaign against the issue, will we see more removals?

As we discussed today, health is our main priority in Twitter, and removing spams is an essential step towards achieving this goal. This is not just a campaign, it is something that we will continue doing, and recently we introduced more measures to handle spams and data manipulation.

We have reduced the visibility of suspicious accounts, to ensure that it is not possible to artificially boost an account, and we have created an update to enforce the fact that every account must validate itself by using an e-mail and a phone number.

In terms of numbers, as of May 2018, we have identified more than 9m potential spammy automated accounts per week, up from 6.4m accounts per week earlier.

As the world heads towards the 5G era, Chinese smartphone maker Oppo conducted the first group video call using 5G technology. The experiment was performed by a team of engineers for six of the company’s research and developing institutes, the call was made by one of Oppo’s newest phones, OPPO R15 Pro-based, and lasted for 17 minutes without any technical glitches.

The test was carried out by using Keysight UXM, which is usually used to support simultaneous cellular and Wi-Fi testing, to simulate 5G frequencies. “We are working to develop our research efforts, which focus on 5G services, in order to become one of the leading companies in this field” Tony Chen, founder and CEO of Oppo said.

Countries like South Korea and the United States have moved early to create a research centre to develop practical uses for the 5G technology, which is estimated to add $565bn to the global economic output over the next 15 years, if it is used to connect robots or other applications.

But governments will first need to harmonise standards for the award of the so-called millimetre-wave spectrum, which can carry the vast data flows needed to power the 5G services, the Global System for Mobile Associations (GSMA) industry association said in a recent report. The GSMA is the global trade body representing the mobile telephone industry.
