Private university student enrollment increased by 14.2% in 2018/19: CAPMAS

The total number of students enrolled in higher education reached 3.104 million students during the academic year 2018/19, compared to 2.985 million students during 2017/18, an increase of 4%.


Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced on Wednesday that students’ enrolment in private universities has increased by 14.2% in the academic year 2018/19.

The total number of students enrolled in higher education reached 3.104 million students during the academic year 2018/19, compared to 2.985 million students during 2017/18, an increase of 4%.

Public universities and Al Azhar represented 72.9% of total enrolments, equivalent to 2.263 million students in 2018/19, compared to 2.212 million students during 2017/18.

195,000 students are currently enrolled in private universities, and represent 6.3% of total higher education students for 2018/19 compared to 170,000 students in 2016/17, an increase of 14.2%.

On the other hand, private higher institutions’ share of students stood at 14.1% in 2018/19, recording 440,000, up from 404,000 in 2017/18, marking a 9% increase.

Academies represent only 1.1% of total students, with CAPMAS recording only 33,200 individuals, while aboveintermediate technical institutes had 147,600 in both private and public schools.

The remaining institutes – non-intermediate or higher – recorded 25,700 students, representing 0.8% of total higher education students in 2018/19.
