Egypt calls on UN to engage in dialogue with Libyan elected representatives

Egypt urged all Libyan parties to take a clear stance and be far away from terrorist and criminal groups, he said, condemning the recent suicide blast in Benghazi and expressing his condolences to the victims' families.

Egypt has called on the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to further cooperate and engage in dialogue with the Libyan elected representatives to crystallise a roadmap that is required for getting over the current crisis in the country, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Cairo also lauded the recent humanitarian truce declared by Libyan parties on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, which it considers a step on the right track for building confidence among them, the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez said on Tuesday.

Egypt reiterated that a comprehensive political solution remains the only way for restoring stability in Libya, Hafez added.

The spokesperson called for initiating an inclusive settlement process in Libya based on addressing all fundamental issues in a comprehensive way, atop of which is achieving justice in distributing resources in the North African country and proceeding with efforts for unifying state institutions as well as disarming militias.

Egypt urged all Libyan parties to take a clear stance and be far away from terrorist and criminal groups, he said, condemning the recent suicide blast in Benghazi and expressing his condolences to the victims’ families.

Earlier this week, a car bomb explosion in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi killed three UN staff members and two other mission members, the United Nations said.

The attack came as the United Nations was brokering a truce in the capital Tripoli, where the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) launched a surprise attack in April, part of the chaos in Libya since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
